15 year old Teacher for Ethical EatingJam
Board member storyteller
7th grade OrigamiJam teacher
Boulder Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is a congregation of 260 members and 180 children and youth. We have 2 paid SpiritJam lead teachers. We invite volunteer Teaching Associates. Here's the way that we used existing staff and added one more position to create the SpiritJam Staff plan:
1 SpiritJam Leader/ RE Assistant, Rachel Stevenson, from RE Assistant position. 10 hrs/week, existing. (The 10 hour per week RE Assistant was leaving. Without volunteers to recruit and support we could change the job description to be a Lead Teacher with 4 hours of general help allocated.)
1 SpiritJam Leader, paid from Day Camp proceeds. 6 hrs/week
1 Youth Coordinator – existing, 15 hrs/week.
1 Lifespan RE Director – existing, 30 hrs/week.
1 Early Childhood Teacher for Nursery/Preschool - existing.
Volunteer Teaching Associates:
We offer a Teaching Associates Program to harness the creative energy and passions of the youth and adults in the congregation. There have always been creative, inspired volunteer teachers. SpiritJam will use the inspired ones to enrich the program, not to run it. They won't have to volunteer each Sunday or be in charge of classroom management. We have paid lead teachers who will know the children and provide consistency.
Each time I offer a presentation to the congregation on this model, I have had someone come up to me and ask if they could be a part, for the most part, folks I’ve never had connections with.
Silvine F. ( age 60’s) - wants to offer a PoetryJam, acting out poems which she has offered in various literacy programs.
Wynn M. (age 60’s) - board member, and member of StorySpinners, wants to work up stories for StoryJams on the Monthly themes.
Karen D. (age 60’s) will be offering a WritingJam for Youth and Adults on the theme of Justice for the SpiritJam Pilot, and will be a part of the Jams in the Fall.
Larry L. (age 60’s), Worship Chair, wants to work up ways to create a WorshipJam, which might then also have something to offer in the Adult service.
Fiona F-G - (age 16 yrs.) has long been a partner with me teaching 4-6th grade and will now have a role as a Teaching Associate.
Teaching Associates do not have to worry about classroom management as the staff Lead Teachers will be the ones to supervise the group. Teaching Associates are there to share their wisdom and gifts.
